Sorry for the delay in replying. =)
Between adding those codes and a "3" to the end of the Grub line as
Paul had suggested, I got it to successfully go to a console and not
try to load X!
Looks like the default depth was set in xorg.conf to 16 instead of 24.
That's all I changed, and I was able to start X up normally.
Sort of... with the default Radeon drivers provided I could do
1280x1024 @ 75 Hz, but with the downloaded binarry drivers from ATI I
can't get above 60Hz, and yet the monitor settings in xorg.conf aren't
any different.
Weird.
Anyway, at least I can get into the system now.
