Ok, basically what I am trying to do is have a BitTorrent client. Not
for illegal downloads of course, just for reg downloads like huge
Debian DVDs and other Linux CDs. Now the system is basically configed
in this way:
CRT Monitor:
Intel 845G Graphics
Intel Pro 100 VE Desktop Adapter
128MB RAM
1.6GHZ (or very close, not sure about excat number off hand, but it's
not less then 1.5 and not more then 2.0.)
Now I tried Ubuntu on that system but it just goes really slow, even
though it's just Gnome not KDE which shouldn't make it go as slow.
Thank you in advanced.
FC4 runs just fine on an old 660MHz Celeron with 256MB PC100 RAM, with
Gnome as default desktop. If you can do away with CUPS and Evolution,
and a few other things- even better.
Recent distros such as FC4 and Ubuntu 5.x are much more responsive
than, say, Red Hat 8.0 or SuSE 7.x were on a similar system a few years
back. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't have a functional Linux
with less than 512MB RAM. People who say things like that are obviously
looking for Windows-caliber responsiveness in a UNIX clone. You're just
not going to get that kind of responsiveness with Linux, no matter what
your system looks like.
And if you want something a little zippier, then don't even install a
graphical shell. Between curses and bash, you're all set. Just find a
console- or curses-based BT client, set it, and forget it.
