I installed FC4 on my Compaq Presario SR1710NX. The machine had WinXP
installed too. But each time I tried to reboot from Linux, the monitor
went to black and the LED light was blinking, which seemed no video
signal detected. I had to do hard reset to turn machine off and then
turn it back on. Did some google, but not much success. BTW, I had no
problem reboot from Windows. Does anyone have any idea? Which config I
should change to make this work in Linux?
I have an sr1625nx with FC4 which has the same mobo and upgraded cpu,
memory, and extras, so they should be similar.
When I _reboot_ from Linux, it, well, ... doesn't. It freezes. Or it
goes into deep sleep. Have not had time to investigate at all as I'm
busy setting up other goodies.
Kind of relieved as someone else had similar problem. I thought it was
my own problem... :-( Bad if it's something related to the BIOS. It's
getting more complicated...
I _speculate_ and _suspect_ that it is a BIOS issue in the way Linux is
shutting down. It is not issueing a "proper" soft reboot signal or is
leaving something in a state that the BIOS can't properly restart.
Suspecting the "aggressive" power management features found on these
boards. Unfortunately the BIOS setup program is simplistic, to say the
least.
Mine has a ~ 15 Nov intro date and yours is only 27 Nov, so they have
not been out in the wild long enough to generate much of a specific
trail. I was planning to get in touch with HP when my other setup
projects are done this weekend if I don't find a homegrown solution.
You might properly guess that I don't have a pressing need to reboot
from Linux to XP :-)
But this doesn't help you -- or me -- at the moment. I'll keep an eye
out on this thread if someone does provide some clues and I will post
whatever I discover -- or don't -- after I have a chance to look into
it myself or get something from HP. Shame is, I _used_ to have an
inside connection to HP technical support. Alas, no more :-(
For what it's worth for now, you may notice that the unit does not
completely power down even when you shutdown from the OS -- look at the
green light on the back. I've just been shutting down, count to 5,
then hit the case's power button to bring up XP when I do need to
switch.
You and me are absolutely in the same boat now as of this. I'll keep
researching and post here should have any solution, otherwise I may
have to uninstall the Linux.
