weird "no space left on device" message on attempt to create directory



Following strange situation: I can create files in some partition just
fine of whatever size both as root and as normal user, only one 1% of
the partiton is used and only 1% of inodes
are used. But mkdir test leads to message: No space left on deivce.
Kernel: 2.4.20
is used. Help is much appreciated.
