Tape drive doesn't show when booting from linux rescue - FC4 - Help?!

I have a dds4 scsi tape drive which works fine under FC4. However,
when I boot from the cd into rescue mode `linux SELINUX=0 rescue`,
bypass the sysimage option directly to the prompt, I have no tape drive
unver /dev/st0 or /dev/nst0 I'm trying to restore a tar of this
computer's filesystem to an ext3 fs on an mdadm RAID 1 array (/dev/md0
which is accessible when issuing the command startraid /dev/md0)
The tape drive shows up correctly under /proc/scsi/scsi but I have no
representative device under /dev/...
After disabling selinux by passing the above kernel parameter, I was
able to get /dev/sda* to appear so that I could record the logs below
to a pen drive for this post...
