Low speed while copying from one HD to another

Hello,
I have the following problem:
I have a computer running Windows XP Pro with two internal harddisks.
After a fatal error, the second harddisk is not readable any more.
So I insterted the Knoppix 3.7-CD and with Linux I can read the
harddisk and all of my files are available.
Now I organized me a external HD for to copy all the files from the
internal to the external HD with Linux.
The internal HD is formatted as NTFS, the external one as ext2 so I can
read it back in Windows with a special driver.
My problem is now:
when I copy the files from the internal to the external HD the
transfer-rate is up to 30MB/s but only for the first 400MB.
After that is breakes down and runs very very slowly.
I tried to copy it with the Konqueror and Itried it also in the
root-bash.
I don't know much about Linux, but there seems to be a problem.
The kernel I am running is 2.6 because with the older one, the
USB-Devices are not recognized.
Thanks for your help
