Maybe a borderline-inane question because of all the variables, but

total technophobe.

I'm thinking about just reformatting the drive and installing Kubuntu.

I've tried Kubuntu against XP on a 1.1 ghz machine with a half gig in
it and don't see a perceptible diff. I'd guess Kubuntu's faster...
but not enough that I perceive it.

But maybe on a much smaller/older machine....?

I might do it anyhow just because of the virus issue...

You might want to try Damn Small Linux. Forget about running any of the
heavyweight desktops like Gnome or KDE, it's out of the question on a
75MHz machine (which I'm guessing has a tiny amount of memory also).
DSL is aimed at machines with limited resources. There is a DSL Live
CD. You can try that first to see if it's significantly better then
what's on the system now.

Heavyweight desktops like Gnome or KDE are NOT mandatory with (k)Ubuntu
you can install Fluxbox instead:

Elightenment and probable other GUI's are also available in the package
manager.

Heavyweight desktops aren't mandatory with any distribution. The advantage
of DSL is that everything about it is tuned for underpowered machines.
It's pruned down to an absolute minimum, uses a 2.4 kernel instead of a
2.6 kernel. The OP wants to but something on a machine that was designed
to run DOS, DSL is the best distribution for machines of that class.
