If you want to use something really old, you *will* have problems
keeping it up to date. (Unless it's an old Debian or Gentoo, when
updating to the latest version of either is relatively simple.) Redhat
7.1 is unmaintained, nobody's producing RPMs for the latest stuff for
it, so running the latest stuff on it will involve compiling from
source. This gets tedious very quickly, unless there's a system like
apt or portage for managing updates of binary packages or source code.
It's your call, of course. But if you want to run recent stuff, you'll
have a much easier time with a more recent distro, or a distro like
Debian or Gentoo that has a good system for keeping things up to date.
