hello all,
I am in the market for an external DVD writer. With so many formats floating
around, I don't want to spend money on something that might not work with
Linux.
I found this on buy.com :
http://www.buy.com/prod/Iomega_Super_DVD_Writer_16x16_Dual_Format_USB_2_0_33245/q/loc/449/10398573.html
Is this a good one, or is there a better cheaper one I could get ?
There are so many brand names one gets the impression there are only a couple manufacturers of the guts and the sellers skin the guts to their brand name. That said, I have searched a few for reliability and such and find there as so many model numbers it is hard to match a discussion group on a model with a seller of that model.
If you go to computer oriented sellers, even Office Depot, you find the prices are within $20 of each other. I have tried them all on different hardware and I have no particular route to recommend. If you have an Office Depot and it has what you want at a decent price (they usually do) get it and keep all receipts. They have a no questions asked returned policy. But that means NEVER buy anything too far below a fair price as it is likely a defective item that was repackaged and they do that all the time. So when you buy it install and use a lot immediately to burn it in.
