Trying to install gtk >= 2.4.0 on RedHat 9 could break many other packages. (I don't know off-hand how much backwards compatibility there is, nor do I know what version RH9 originally shipped with.)

Your best bet is to upgrade to a more recent distribution if you really need Adobe Reader 7.x. Alternatively, if you must stay with RH9 for some reason, use an older version of Adobe Reader or try xpdf or one of the other free PDF viewers.
