Greetings.
What steps do I need to take to be more secure when shopping online,
besides keeping the security updates up to date?
Using linux is usually a very good start as it's inherently safer and
the script kiddies are targetting linux (yet!).
I know that it won't be totally secure, but more secure is better than
nothing at all.
Most malware will be ineffective on Linux, but you're still open to
behavioural attacks such as phishing etc. See below for some ideas of
where to look for problems:

Do I need to add anything else to my linux box software wise?
It depends on your setup and distro. AFAICT the mainstream distros will
have a firewall built-in (e.g. guarddog). Some people also have an AV
scanner running - not for their benefit, but stop any windows machines
on the network from being attacked or forwarding any infected files
onto windows users.
