Is there a nero equivalent for linux?

Yes: nero.

I got a data cd from someone, by ftp, and it never crossed my
mind that it would be anything other than an iso image, but I
saw it had extension .nrg. I asked the guy and he said it's a
nero format. I have no windows, no nero and stuff like that,
can I read it in linux?

I doubt it.

If you can't figure out how to google for "nero linux" or "nero
..nrg linux" you're probably not going to be able to do anything
useful with the .nrg file.
