For IRC I know I can usually ignore users with:
/ignore ObnoxiousIRCUser
When I try this in Xchat I get a cryptic BNR help message.
You mean the help message that tells you how to do it?
Like this?:
Usage: IGNORE <mask> <types..> <options..>
mask - host mask to ignore, eg: *!*@*.aol.com
types - types of data to ignore, one or all of:
PRIV, CHAN, NOTI, CTCP, DCC, INVI, ALL
options - NOSAVE, QUIET
What's hard about that?
Anyone know how to ignore a user with xchat?
Well, you could do it the easy way with a command line, as indicated
above, or.... you could use the Menus under "Window"/"Ignore List" and add
the person's name. You didn't see that?
Also how can I tell others irc commands and successfully display a "/"
without it being interpreted as a command.
You could enclose the example command in quotes, like this:
"/msg nickserv ...."
Or, you could just precede the entire command with one space. As long as
the / character isn't the first one on a line, it's just another character.

If you're not on the edge, you're taking up too much space.
