On Friday 14 April 2006 21:23, djkanor@xxxxxxxxx stood up and spoke the
following words to the masses in /comp.os.linux.misc...:/
I have a nagging problem with linux: I have used many linux flavors
for years, but have yet to find a consistent means to do something
that I think should just happen!: drop a CD, DVD in my drive, or
attached a USB memory stick and have linux automatically register it's
existance, put an icon on my desktop, and allow me to access it.
And what makes you think those things *should* just happen? Have you
ever heard of the concepts "security" and "system integrity"? ;-)
Yes, just like Windows or Macs. I know the utility exists in GNOME,
somehow, but it is rather limited. USB memory sticks are still a
problem
You should have /hald/ installed and your system should make use of
/udev/ to manage the device special files in */dev.*
Both have manuals... ;-)
What are the correct steps to allow simple "hotswapping" of external
USB drives, and, more importantly, the ability to access CDs and DVDs
without having to command-line mount every single time?
As above. As another poster has told you however, audio CD's do not
have a filesystem on them.
Hope this helps... ;-)
