Getting Sony DCR-HC26 to talk to Linux

Hi,
I bought a Sony camcorder, model DCR-HC26, with USB and firewire. First, I
tried USB - 99% of other USB devices have either automatically mounted as
/mnt/removable (or something), or I could look in dmesg and see what was
detected and mount manually. This time, all I get in dmesg is "Device
refused address <i> - Error -110", where <i> increments at each attempt.
So, I tried firewire. Mandrake 10.0 has the modules: ochi1394, raw1394,
etc. I modprobe'd them and got /dev/raw1394. Downloaded gscanbus RPM, and
it installed without comment. Ran gscanbus. It "ran", but there was no
output, no error msg, nothing. When I tried to stop it (either with
ctrl-C, closing the window, etc) it locked the machine, hard. And when I
reboot, I find gscan had "disappeared" (huh?)
Any suggestions, help, advice? Anybody got this camcorder working on their
system, either with USB or Firewire?
