Still looking for the right OS

So, after much time and research, I'm still not sure which OS I'll sink
my teeth into. Certainly I plan to get into Linux From Scratch
eventually.
Basically what I want in a system is IceWM and KDE; an installer that
handles partitions and will have a boot loader so I can multi-boot OSs;
a package manager like Conary that will take care of dependencies for
me as well as the ability to compile myself and install from tar.gz.
I plan on using Seamonkey for web browsing and email. NVU for web
design. Openoffice for word processing.
The OS needs to be able to read NTFS but doesn't need to be able to
make changes to it.
I want it to show me that its faster than Windows XP too.
Where before I was leaning towards Suse and Vector, I've Been looking
lately at rPath, MyahOS, and PCLinuxOS.
Of course Fedora (I have a red hat book), Mepis, Lunar, and Gentoo are
in the mix too.
I loved Xandros, but its not compatible with my A7V8X-X MLB Sound. I
hated Ubuntu all around.
I'm not really a huge fan of the Synaptic PM or Gnome.
Basically I want an OS that is easy and configurable, but will allow me
to learn the command line better, and learn to compile programs myself.
I don't HAVE to use Conary, I just liked how it comes accross in the
reviews. I don't know if Smart or 0install are as good...
I will most definately be snagging the Nexenta Live CD and OliveBSD
Live to have a look at them, and may even try Desktop BSD but those
will all be a 3rd OS. Right now I need a 2nd OS that will teach me
what I need to know but allow me some ease of use when I'm not in
'learning mode.'
