So, after much time and research, I'm still not sure which OS I'll sink
my teeth into. Certainly I plan to get into Linux From Scratch
eventually.

Basically what I want in a system is IceWM and KDE; an installer that
handles partitions and will have a boot loader so I can multi-boot OSs;
a package manager like Conary that will take care of dependencies for
me as well as the ability to compile myself and install from tar.gz.

See Slackware: like a pre-compiled LFS ;) Unix-like focus, I chose
slack a couple years ago after using redhat for years, tried / rejected
SuSE, Gentoo, Debian, the various derivative distros (*ubuntu, et al)
disappoint as I don't need GNU/Linux bent to windoze look and feel, I
can run windoze for that ;)

I don't understand people who say this distro or that distro is
too much like Windows (or whatever). The distros I have used,
including Debian and derivatives, Mandrake/Madriva, LFS, etc. all
look the same, and none looks anything like Windows.

Getting a new distro to look the way I want doesn't involve any
work. I just use window manager I want (all are available on all
distros) and the same home directory which has the settings I
want.

I would no more use a distro without adjusting it to my likes than
I would get into a car and drive off without adjusting the seat
and the mirrors.
