Make a few correction:

^Newsgroups:.*[, ]alt.usenet.kooks,

pattern = ^Newsgroups:.*[, ]alt.usenet.kooks,
action = kill

[cut]

correct these too as have been corrected above.
every pattern needs an action of its own.

Since when? The OP's filter syntax is very similar to my own (working) filter file, for leafnode 1.11.2 as shipped in Debian/stable. Are you using a different version of leafnode perhaps?

I tried it in the mean time. As expected, doesn't work. Maybe Balwinder can share with us which version he is working with ???

But this still leaves my issue open. I hope someone has a solution or idea where to look!

Every Horse has an Infinite Number of Legs (proof by intimidation):

Horses have an even number of legs. Behind they have two legs, and in
front they have fore-legs. This makes six legs, which is certainly an
odd number of legs for a horse. But the only number that is both even
and odd is infinity. Therefore, horses have an infinite number of
legs. Now to show this for the general case, suppose that somewhere,
there is a horse that has a finite number of legs. But that is a horse
of another color, and by the lemma ["All horses are the same color"],
that does not exist.
