So, after much time and research, I'm still not sure which OS I'll sink<snip>

Basically what I want in a system is IceWM and KDE; an installer that
handles partitions and will have a boot loader so I can multi-boot OSs;
a package manager like Conary that will take care of dependencies for
me as well as the ability to compile myself and install from tar.gz.
The bootloader is not tied to the OS. Your "research" is still at a
shallow level. Don't put so much stock into "Linux from scratch" as a
be-all, end-all. You are likely to be disappointed when you "meet the
maharshi."
From the title of your thread, I was expecting a deliberate search whichhas spanned the gamut of free/open OSs, including the BSD family. Upon
closer inspection, I see you are posting from Windows using Google groups,
and surprisingly not using OE. Have you installed _any_ GNU/Linux in your
"search"? Where is the flatfish detector when it's needed?
