Re: Still looking for the right OS

Yep, a quick start to LFS ;) I'm not worried about slackware going

Pat V. has indicated, there's a 'succession' plan in place...

Good to know!

Debian has a lot of future potential, and the apt-get is easy to
use, but dependency hell goes on and Ubuntu soured me on more Debian in
general.

Funny, I never figured out Debian, and the various derivatives Ubuntu,
Knoppix confuse me.

I didn't find Debian hard to learn or anything, but the distros with
Synaptic got on my nerves. I haven't tried any RPM based distros yet
to see if they work better then debs.

I use both windoze and linux, I have FreeBSD on the laptop, it boots...

In the general world, knowing XP is useful. "It boots..." Nice. I
prefer OpenBSD myself, but am willing to give Desktop or PC BSD
versions of Free a try.

as it is mainly used as desktop with PuTTY now, I'm still looking for a

Likely I'll have to keep it on my PC for some time to come. Some
games, and it will always be networked to other Windows PCs and a Mac.
Too much business is done on Windows and I have to use Windows for
work. Heh... we still use Dbase at work.

decent linux email and news UA that can handle mailing lists and usenet
like I'm used to with this 'doze application I used for last ten years

Well in Windows I use Firefox for browsing and have just moved from
Opera to Pegasus for email. In Linux I'm going to stick with Seamonkey
for both. I don't care for Evolution that's for sure. Its not bad,
just not what I want.

Grant.

Thanks for the input.
