Kernel 2.4 and widescreen console

I'm trying to enable a high resolution VGA console on my widescreen
LCD, SGI 1600SW. The problem I'm having is I can't find the right vga
mode to pass to the kernel at boot time.
In my /boot/grub/menu.1st the best I can do is "vga=795". That gives me
1280x1024 @ 77 Hz. I'm not sure of the bit depth. Ideally I want to
have 1600x1024 @ 60 Hz and 32 bit depth.
Using Google, I can find other widescreen vga mode numbers for
resolutions like 1280x800 and 1440x900, but not 1600x1024.
I'm running a 2.4.x kernel so apparently I can't do anything like
video=radeonfb:1600x1024-32@60 in /boot/grub/menu.1st.
I've been grepping the video drivers in the kernel source and haven't
come up with anything either.
Any suggestions? Is there a list of these modes somewhere?
