I'm trying to enable a high resolution VGA console on my widescreen
LCD, SGI 1600SW. The problem I'm having is I can't find the right vga
mode to pass to the kernel at boot time. In my /boot/grub/menu.1st
the best I can do is "vga=795". That gives me 1280x1024 @ 77 Hz.
The modes available with this are going to be VESA modes. VESA didn't
define anything 1600 pixels wide IIRC.
Ideally I want to have 1600x1024 @ 60 Hz and 32 bit depth.
On a text console? Not likely. Just run X, use a light WM, run an
xterm or aterm or konsole in fullscreen mode. There are just too many
advantages to running X, and too many problems with running virtual
consoles at anything other than 80x25, for me to recommend that anyone
fool around with framebuffers unless they enjoy pain.
I'm running a 2.4.x kernel so apparently I can't do anything like
video=radeonfb:1600x1024-32@60
Why are you running a 2.4 kernel? 2.6 is where it's at now, and many
pieces of your hardware will run better in 2.6 than 2.4.
vga=ask
....won't get what the OP wants.
