rpc.statd using CPU excessively

Hi all,
Why is my rpc.statd using 20%-40% of my CPU ?
I have two linux boxes, one exporting a file system, and
the other mounting it over NFS. Neither the client machine
nor the server have had any applications or programs doing
anything to files on the exported/mounted file system over
the last few days, but the CPU usage of rpc.statd on the
server remains fairly constant between 20% and 40%.
Neither the client box or the server have ever had any other
NFS exports or mounts defined, and the server only specifies
the client box specifically by IP address as authorized to access
the export.
Any suggestions ?
.
