Hi
I have installed Redhat Linux 9 on a Compaq ML370 with 3 72GB Drives on
RAID5. I also use Telnet, FTP and Samba. Everything was working fine,
but after a day I suddenly could not log in via telnet or FTP. I can
still log in from the console as Root. The database on the server stil
works fine. If I type in StartX from the console it now gives me an
error and will not start. Somthing about a font file it cannot load. If
I try to FTP it gives me an error 500. OOPS chdir Login failed. If I
telnet or try to login from the console, it flashes a message very
quickly and it has something to do with no user directory.
I can login as root and FTP to another server and transfer date that
way. Have anyone have any idea how to fix the problem.
Yep.
- Install a recent distro* yours is EOL since some years
- Install all patches frequently using distro provided update
tools (up2date/yum in case of Redhat)
- Don't use telnet, it's depreciated since ages, use ssh
- Disable direct root logins
- Don't use the root user for ftp, better use scp instead
- There are Doze tools putty + winscp to keep you behind your
sodding doze box freely available which do a great job for
using ssh/scp from M$
* Fedora Core 5, RHEL 4 or one of the free clones like CentOS if
you want/like RH. To save you typing:

http://www.redhat.com/
http://www.centos.org/
Good luck
BTW
Since you might be new to usenet, this is *NOT* a groups.google
