how to play m3u playlist from a website?

I am having the damnest time figuring out how to use my mp3 player in
linux to play an m3u file to play mp3 files hosted or streamed from
remote locations.

I'm talking about a file like this one

http://webjay.org/by/ghetosmurph/playlist1 ( you have to choose the
dropdown box) or the m3u file found on this page.

http://www.archive.org/details/ird059

the default behavior in my recent linux install (fedora core 5) is to
open mplayer. And then to do absolutely nothing.

There are two other players: XMMS and Ryythm Box Music Player, but
neither seems to have a way of automatically playing an online m3u
file. the only purpose for m3u playlists in linux, it seems, is to play
local music files.

In a Windows environment I'm guessing what happens is that your media
player opens the m3u file (I use winamp) and then downloads the mp3
into a tmp directory which it then proceeds to play. It has always
worked flawlessly. Can anyone offer any help here for how to do it in
linux? Thanks.

Am I missing something obvious here?
