I added "geometric" to global section of lilo.conf, also
un-remarked the three rules lines for ntfs. So now we get:

I have no idea why you had that junk in the global section of lilo.conf
file. Why not get rid of it? (since you removed that part in your response
I cannot even tell you exactly which part it was. )
When I # the ntfs rules, mbr is written (as before), but still
all of the grumbling. LILO hates me!
Your bios and disk disagree. Lilo SHOULD grumble. It is a dangerous
situation. But if the mbr is written, what is your problem?Does it boot?
That is ALL that lilo is supposed to accomplish-- letting you boot your
system.
I tried to slapt-get grub, but it is not in the repository.
Wow. Everybody in Holland uses lilo, eh? No more time to
chase this now, but will install my friend grub later.
Incidently: the large swap was necessary to install Vector.
First attempt aborted half way through ... swap was 400 mB.
Making it 500 mB (as recommended by installer) fixed it.
One good thing about struggling with old machine: it feels
soooo good to go back to modern box!
