Yes, but I should be able to choose for it not to install stuff like
printers, firewalls, pcmcia, isdn etc.

As someone pointed out, Ubuntu doesn't allow for that,
presumingly as hd size in halfway recent system are pretty large
and it's usually easier for a new user if he has plenty of
software available then letting him hunt for something.

See above, you could just remove them as John-Paul pointed out,
or use another distro if you really want/need more choice while
installing. Fedora Core 5 is a great choice if you want the
latest whizzbang stuff, transparent desktop and alike.

This howto seems to provide useful hints to get a good FC 5

Be sure to run 'yum update' after initial install.
