extrapolates to -29 million- is pretty suspect, no?

I think so, too, but that site is pretty conscientious and does the best it
can. Since not every single installation is licensed by a central authority,
it is difficult to know just how many machines run Linux. Red Hat might, but
probably not, reveal how many users they have for their distributions, but
even there, that would apply only to those who paid for their subscriptions.
Similarly for other distributers.

Seems impossible, if you could get an average count about user
agent distribution over a large enough amount of http servers it
might be a rough indication concerning desktop usage nothing
more. Ore download numbers of popular software like firefox, or
better skype would give some indication.

But it remains unknown how large the Linux desktop market share
is.
