Re: problem with the x server

In comp.os.linux.misc tektonac <tektonac@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>:
hi everyone,

i'm experiencing a problem with x server on fedora core 5 ... it won't start
...

i get the message in system log: failed to start x server
gdm_server_spawn: Xserver not found /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -audit 0 -auth
/var/gdm/:0.Xaut no listen tcp vt7

error: command could not be executed. please install the x server or correct
GDM configuration and restart GDM.

I noticed that there are few broken links to /usr/bin/Xorg which doesn't
exist?. The system was running fine for days. I tried installing x server
through yum and it seems it was installing packages but nothing changed. I
guess reinstallation would cure the problem but don't know how to do it. Any
help is appreciated as always :)

Run 'rpm -V xorg-x11-server-Xorg' and see what problems exist,
run 'rpm -Va' to check all packages installed. Keep an eye on X
related files. How did you install X through yum?

I'd prefer a yum install if available to get anything in one go.
'yum groupinstall "X Window System"' or so, check 'man yum' for
more info.

Did you check /var/log/yum.log? What yum has really done?

There's no reason to reinstall Linux for such a minor problem.
