I doubt it. "man trident" on Xorg 6.8.2 doesn't say anything about "no
acceleration on Blade chipsets". Shared video RAM is orthogonal to 2D
and XV acceleration. You may wish to grep through
http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/mailman/listinfo/linux-thinkpad for
anything related to keyword "R31", because I'm sure people have asked
and answered questions about that particular laptop's video chipset
before. And make sure you're not using "vesa"; that'll slow things
down.
I got the Trident Blade stuff from looking through the PDF of
the manual at work (I found it on IBM/Lenovo's website). I
don't see any info on boot. I will look through the
mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/etc. server and see what I can find
out.
800x600? Yuck. If that isn't the native size of this laptop's LCD, you
need to fix your xorg.conf. Most of the pages for the R31 on
tuxmobil.org describe the R31 as having a 1024x768 LCD and an i830 video
chip, not a Trident chip. Did you mispel the model#, or are there
multiple versions of the R31? You may want to post the output of
/sbin/lspci so we can find out exactly what your video chip is.
I don't have a clue on what the native size of the laptop is. I
figured I was doing pretty good to find the chipset. This is
running what FC4 set-up. Evidently the hardware probing didn't
do such a terrific job on the video.
Here are the results of lspci (slightly edited to wrap in nicer
places):

So it looks like you're right about the 830 chipset (82830),
I don't have a clue on how to use that information. Even
though this laptop has been operational for 5 or 6 months,
there are still lots and lots of things I don't know much
about (like video and audio set-up, etc.) I figure that
once the video and audio are correctly configured I would
configure X using xconfig. BTW, audio seems to work
sometimes and sometimes it doesn't, then again it could
just be that the app's I've been using are quiet.
