Using a US keyboard, how can one type characters like accented letters,I have set another language in KDE Control Center --> Regional & accessibility --> Keyboard Layouts.
umlaut vowels, etc?
Besides (default on my FC4):
US English w/ ISO9995 keymap en_US
I have added
US English w/ deadkeys keymap us_intl
These options translate to the commands:
setxkbmap -model logiik -layout us_intl
setxkbmap -model logiik -layout en_US
(logiik refers to my Logitech Internet Keyb)
At the switching options tab I flagged "Show Country Flag".
As most things *NIX all details are highly configurable. All depends on your knowledge and effort. See the other replies for nice pointers. That Tuxmagazine article sort of summarizes the above.
My personal gripe wrt flags indicator is that I never get to see actual flags on my system, I only see a grey rectangle with abbreviations in them (you can set the desired labels too from within control center). I hope to find out someday why I don't see those nifty little country flags.
