looks like it could be what you're missing. It's a snapshot based backup
system using rsync and (lots of) symlinks.

early backup the later ones still have the file.

"snapshot makes extensive use of hard links, so if the file doesn't change,
the next snapshot is simply a hard link to the exact same file."

Of course, a real NAS (or even FreeBSD) would have this as standard
anyway. But that doesn't help those of us who don't have a NAS.
