I would like to link two linux boxes through their ethernet cards with
a cross over cable.
/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf on both pc's have been configured to get the
ethernet interface linked with the ethernet card working in DHCP mode.
samba is configured on both boxes, and smbd running.
one of the boxes is equipped with wifi and has nmdb running. everything
works fine (internet, shared files are available on any running windows
pc, i cann access to local networks...)
the other has only the ethernet card, and nmbd -D won't be running!
i can't find any related error messages in /var/log/samba/log.nmdb
ps: on both boxes the running linux is slackware 10.2
ok men, I might have badly told everything!
the context:
there are two computers, one is equipped with an ethernet card and
other stuff that actually is not useful now, so forget about wifi.
the other computer has also an ethernet card.
I would like link these boxes through by means of a cross over cable
(rj45) so that I can make some files transfers.
how should I proceed?
crossover cable (though you could use one). On new cards they notice things
like that and adjust.
they don't of course! this is the main problem. ;)
Once connected electrically, you might wish for each machine to ping the
other to make sure the hardware works. man ping
If they can ping one another,
for both boxes drivers are loaded
but they won't communicate each other;
when i type: /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 (i remind i'm using slack 10.2)
dhcpcd: MAC addess = xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ping "the other box"
connect: Network unreacheable
you can transfer files may ways. I normally
use scp (part of ssh suite). man ssh man scp
You can also run nfs on both machines and mount the various file systems on
the other machine. I advise making them read-only. If each machine mounts
stuff on the other, you may get in trouble trying to shut them down or
rebooting them. I have stuff from machine B mounted on machine A, but not
vice versa. I sometimes have trouble shutting one of them down (I forget
which), or maybe it is booting them.
