Re: Networking and file saving with Knoppix

In comp.os.linux.misc notPythias <damon.wang@xxxxxxxxx>:
Hey, all.

I just now realized that---don't laugh---networking goes through
the operating system. The LAN I so painfully intalled in Windows
will not magically appear when I boot up Knoppix unless I set it
up again (right?).

Unsure what is so painfully about it?

But you usually use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to
ease up things. Knoppix will automatically look for some DHCP
server and configure itself accordingly asap.

In addition you can handover dns server to the clients.

I know how to display settings with Windows's ipconfig command,
and my router uses static addresses. Is there someplace in

Dunno what router you are using, but it's not unusual those have
a built in dhcp server. Check the manual if yours allows, this
should ease up things and allow to configure handing over the
same IP no matter which OS you are booting.

Speaking of saving files, the Knoppix homepage says it can read
and write to a FAT32 partition. Does that mean that I can be in
Knoppix and work with my Windows files? And would it be smart to
do that? I know there are often problems when a file gets shared
between Mac and Windows, even using the same programs.

Should work if you are really running vfat, AFAIK eXPensive is
using NTFS per default and will not allow you to create larger
vfat filesystems. But force you to use ntfs, even if Linux can
easily create larger vfat filesystems ('mkfs.vfat') that will
work in addition with M$. Seems just another marketing trick...

Be aware that there might be problems with ASCII files you need
to run through dos2unix/unix2dos, as doze can't even handle this
properly.

In short, better get rid of doze completely if possible. The
whole system was just designed to effectively force their users
to use nothing else beside it and they will usually just fall
from one trap into the next. Missing the experience to avoid
those annoyances and later probably blame Linux or other other OS
for the problem. This is by design!

Good luck
