Oh, so you already tried it. Hadn't read this before sending my other
response. Did you check that it took by doing:
cat /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space
I just get "1". Is that correct?
It defaults to one and the intent of the echo command is to change it to
a zero. The command is one line and that's a "zero" not an "oh" after
"echo". It won't survive a reboot unless you put it in a startup script
or /etc/sysctl.conf as I outlined in my other post. For testing you can
cut and paste this:
echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space
I use Debian rather than Ubuntu, but IIRC one difference is that Ubuntu
doesn't have a root account you can log into. You might have to use
"sudo -s" or "sudo bash" to start a root shell. The setting will only
change if you are actually root. You can use "whoami" to see what user
you are.
Note that "sudo echo 0 > ..." won't work as you might expect.
I should have put on my configuration the table before: AMD Athlon XP
2000+ (running at 1,2 Ghz, voluntary Bios setting), 384 Mb of RAM, 20 Gb
hard disk (/ 15 Gb, /home 2Gb, swap 1Gb, another 1 Gb not yet
formatted), the whole thing running under the latest Ubuntu release
(6.06 Dapper Drake with all its updates installed).
Ok, that sounds fairly conventional. What's the output of "uname -a"?
