Why are you trying to use that version of Linux?

Why should the O.P. not use that version of Linux? I use it with success on
my old machine because I run Red Hat Enterprise Linux on my main machine and
I wanted a free version as much like it as possible. I do not want the
latest and greatest, but something stable and supported for 7 years at a
stretch.

If I wanted the latest and greatest, I suppose I would go with Fedora.

i've wasteed so may fucking disks trying to get this pieve of ***
running. Downloaded deifferent versions from different sites. Seems
when i do a media check on them some fail, some dont. I'd like to
blame it on the burning program but since some pass the CD check it
makes it hard to believe it's the burning program.

Sounds like you're trying to burn CDs a little too fast. It's usually
a good idea to try and burn them more slowly, anyway -- some media just
doesn't handle the correspondingly weaker laser signal when buring at
close to top speed.

I always try to burn at the slowest speed Roxio will let me because
otherwise my wife's box has trouble reading the discs (you can hear it
skipping and re-reading sections of disks that I burn fullspeed).

I have no trouble burning at 10x or 12x (depending if I am using RW or R
CDs), but my CD burner is on a SCSI controller all its own, and it has a
burnfree (or whatever it is called) feature, so the only coasters I make are
those where I burn the wrong files or something. And that does not happen
with .iso files. My blank CSs are rated at 52X, and the CD burner is Plextor
PlexWriter 12/10/32S.
