Thanks for the pointer. I was having a somewhat similar problem with
an old machine I bought over the weekend and tried to put FC5 on.
Worked fine on the install kernel and crashed on newer kernels with
that message about trying to kill init. I wound up repeating the
install, but instead of letting it do its own thing on the disk, with
volume groups and all, I just did a custom partitioning of the disk
and make a real partition for / and installed that way and no more
trouble from that. I haven't taken the time to learn what volume
groups are good for anyway.
