I see no problem with this group; Cygwin is intended to create a
Unix/Linux like environment, and does a pretty good job (although
it is slow, compared with such packages as DJGPP),
I wasn't 'til now aware of DJGPP. I like the fact that it creates standalone DOS
executables, but I'm a little uncertain about using it because of the "Known
DJGPP problems on Windows 2000 and XP" - I'm on Win2K right now at work. I like
using long file names and the idea that rm -rf in a deep directory can remove
all files on disk compels me pause to think.

As such, you have access to many languages, including C, but not VB
under Cygwin. I suggest you stick with real languages, which VB is
not.
:-)
All I needed to do was to get the job done, with an added value of increasing my
knowledge of open source tools (I run Linux at home and someday I might find a
real job ;-). Cygwin launches the VB app quite nicely, though I readily admit it
is a rather odd way to do things. It's a bit harder in C (or the many languages
to which I have access) to take an existing Crystal 8.5 Report file, marry it up
with MS SQL Server data, export it as a PDF, then e-mail it via SMTP to some
users. The VB version already works and I'm loathe to sink more time into the
report.
