grub serial console and PCI serial card

Hello,
I'm trying to get grub to support a serial console using a PCI serial card
that is installed in my PC. The card is a 2-port PCI 16550A. It's a
startech card and is identified as a netmos 9835.
I have an existing COM1 (/dev/ttyS0) on the motherboard that is being used
for kgdb debugging. The PCI card is detected as either ttyS1/ttyS2 in my
2.6.15 kernel or ttyS4/ttyS5 in my 2.6.9 kernel.
The 2.6.15 kernel reports the first port at address bc00/irq169; The 2.6.9
sees it at bc00/irq209
The serial console in the *kernel* works fine with this card, but it does
not work inside the grub bootloader. I've tried various settings (0-4) for
--unit= in the serial parameter in grub.conf to no avail.
Any suggestions on how to get it to work with grub?
Thanks,
Scott
