In general compiling your kernel is a dumb thing to do. You will in
general
mess things up rather than improve things. Occasionally it is necesaary.

I run Gentoo. It is necessary to compile your own kernel. You can take the
easy option with genkernel or you can take the hard option and compile it
from gentoo patched or vanilla sources. I compile mine from gentoo patched
sources.
What's wrong with messing things up? You can always revert back to your old
kernel and tune your new one until you get it right.
I agree that it's probably not the deal for linux newbies, but one of the
joys of open source is actually tuning the source to your needs and
compiling a custom kernel to match your requirements.
