No.
In general compiling your kernel is a dumb thing to do. You will in general
mess things up rather than improve things. Occasionally it is necesaary.
Occasionally.

On the other hand it is usually helpful if someone wants to get
closer to it. See what options there are and how it works
generally. For a single box it is IMHO a good learning
experience, though one should ensure there is at least one kernel
installed and configured known to boot.

Is it a good idea if I do an appendectomy on my girlfriend? Yes, it is a
good idea if you want to get closer to her.
Gives you a feeling about how her bowels look and how easily she bleeds.

I agree that the way how to do it is pretty easy, but zillions of
options might be far ahead for some newbie. Starting over with a
distro .config might ease up things.

Though I am unsure about the OP, if his problems start with
finding out how to compile a kernel, he might perhaps better
start learning how to use google for what it was intended to
do...

He would be far far more advised in learing how to use linux.

My suggestion for people who want to get closer to Linux, just
use it! If you think you would gain much knowledge about it if
you use putty to login and stay in IE, forget about it. It is
pretty likely you will never ever get the slightest clue about
unix systems such as linux.

None would start arguing about if you could learn driving a
car/truck/motorbike/etc from just looking/reading. You have to
practice it. Same is true for getting closer to some OS, start
using it now!

But you do not do a ring job on the car as the first thing, no matter how
much you have been told it might make your car run faster.
