Hi,
I installed ati's proprietary driver (not manually -- i used the
rpm.livna.org). I never really got that working the way I wanted to.
I can't use OpenGL and stuff like that. However, that is not the issue
at hand (but if you know a lot about that stuff, please let me know).
After trying to install it, now all my applications load really slow.
For instance I will open gedit and it will take 30 seconds to load (I
have a fairly new computer -- way to fast for it to take that long to
load -- plus it didn't load that slow before all the video card stuff).
Once it is loaded, it is super fast, just like normal. It is just the
loading that is slow.
Any ideas?
I have noticed delays of a few (about 3) seconds when
starting up something that uses DRI/DRM (3-D acceleration).
I believe I have always used the open-source drivers. My
systems have 1.8-2.4GHz Pentium 4 "A" processors and Radeon
7000-7500 cards for speed comparison. I may have also
noticed delays of a few (again about 3) seconds when
starting some gtk2 applications.
Does anything show up in the X log files or in /var/log/*
during the delay time?
Perhaps it might be useful to compare times for gtk2 and/or
DRI applications vs. other applications that don't use gtk2
or DRI.
