I'm really new to this FEDORA thing, and I need to know how to
configure a TCP/IP printer [HP LJ4250] into FEDORA Core 5. I'm alright
on Windows, but a novice with FEDORA.
Any basic tips would be great, to get me started.
You need to have cups installed and running.
http://localhost:631 is the admin interface for cups.
The pages are pretty self-explanatory.
Unless cups has been specifically configured not to need it, you're
going to need that root password.
The "CUPS password" that one is asked for is completely incomprehensible
since one is never asked to set it.
As you say, one has to use the root password.
RH/Fedora also has a utility system-config-printer.
YMMV, but I prefer the native cups pages by far.
I tried yesterday (as an exercise) to set up a printer
using the CUPS web interface (on 127.0.0.1:631) to print on a printer
attached to another computer on the LAN.
I made sure I had the pristine files in /etc/cups
and followed the instructions carefully.
They did not work.
I challenge anyone who claims this works to say _exactly_ what they did.
I then ran system-config-printer (under Fedora-5),
and this did work, which was a surprise to me,
as I tried this some months ago and it did not work.
(I had to edit the files in /etc/cups/ by hand.)
Evidently the latest version of this application is an improvement.
