Hello everyone,
I am ready to jump in the Linux bandwagon but i am still hesitating as
to which distribution I should focus on. This is why i need your advice
and/or insights.
But let me give you some idea of my profile so that you can better
understand my position. I am a software professional with extensive
Unix experience and knowledge, including hp-ux, aix and solaris. I've
also experimented with Red Hat Linux (server). I am planning to
I'd suggest Fedora Core (FC5 is recent) the free version of Red
Hat. It comes with recent stuff, (be sure to run 'yum update'
after installing) like usually the most recent KDE version. USB
works like a charm with it, haven't used any other distro where
USB was just plug and play like FC5.
Following two instructions how to get the most out of FC5 with
the least effort:
http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_5_installation_notes.html
http://www.gagme.com/greg/linux/fc5-tips.php
FC5 uses 'yum' for updating/installing software, it is just a
front-end to rpm the real package manager but resolves
dependencies automatically for you, on update, install and
others.
You can for example even install a package you got from other
source with it, while letting it try to resolve any dependencies
for you ("localinstall" option - see 'man yum'). Yum is a CLI
tool, but there are various GUIs for it if you like.
Good luck
