I'm having a hard time figuring out how to fully backup my entire

The only program that seams to work (sometimes :) ) is mondoarchive
but it doesn't include the /proc, /dev/ and /sys directories in it's
archive during the backup process. At this point I wonder, why a
distaster recovery progam like mondoarchive does not backup these vital
directories without whom linux can't boot up.
One crude but effective approach: boot some other linux (e.g. a rescue
disk or a "live CD" distribution), mount the system you want to back
up and something you can at least temporarily keep the backup on, and
use tar, as in "tar -zcvf /mnt/backup/yyyy-mm-dd.tar.gz
/mnt/sysimage".
