[...]Better use the --one-file-system option to tar, then, so you
don't try to back up huge, useless things like /proc/kcore or waste
time traversing the giant /sys dirtree. That means multiple tar
commands if you have more than one partition, of course.
It looks like you have made some assumptions inconsistent with what I
actually said [which involved booting another system to back up a
running system]. For example, /proc will be empty on the system you
are backing up if you are running a live CD, a rescue CD, or

...because booting another system in order to back up a system that's
*already running* sounds like a really stupid and time-consuming idea.
Backups need to be as easy and automated as they can be--and the OP has
a tape drive. A simple cron job involving multiple tar commands could
get every partition without the need to worry about /proc or /sys, or
the need to reboot.

I'm not the least bit interested in some whos-the-uber-geek ego joust
here - I'm sure it's you, hands down. I just made the suggestion
because I had found it useful - backing up the entire thing while it
isn't running leaves no question of lock files, or of what else might
be in the wrong state, when the system is up, for the purpose of
restoration when the system has crashed, or of having to be sure what
will or won't be needed in the backup. And if it were patently
stupid, you wouldn't have needed to misrepresent it when you reacted
the first time.

I did say it was crude, and could probably be improved on; I'm
thinking of looking into Mondo - thanks, sasageissa@xxxxxxxxxxx :)

But it it only moderately time-consuming, beyond what is inherent in
the nature of a full backup, and completely effective. Way to chill
potentially helpful future suggestions from others, DwC, throwing in
gratuitous ridicule just to prove you have a bigger one, or are a
bigger one, or whatever, without even bothering to get your argument
straight the first time....
