I have a PC with a XP recovery partition as the first partition on the
hard drive. When booting the XP boot loader offers the option of
booting into XP or recovery mode.

If I install Linux will GRUB recognise the the recovery partition

Possibly, but I don't know definitely if there is anything to
differentiate the recovery partition to grub. However, it will continue
to be on your XP loader list.

and list all the boot options (i.e. Linux, XP, XP recovery)

As I wrote above, this will depend on whether there is anything to tell
Linux that it is a separate system. My guess is that the recovery
system option on your XP loader will be like when you install XP
alongside an older version of Windows - the two systems are not really
separate and cannot function without each other.

If my guess is right, then Grub will offer you Linux or Windows and XP
will offer you the two different ways of invoking XP.

or will it do something "nasty" to the existing XP recovery partition?

Linux was not written by Microsoft, so it is not designed to do nasty
things to other people's systems.

OTOH, whilst you are installing, Linux *will* believe that you are
capable of making choices, so if *you* tell the installer to wipe out
the "recovery" partition, the Linux installer will believe that you
*want* it to do what you *tell* it to do.
