I have a PC with a XP recovery partition as the first partition

If I install Linux will GRUB recognise the the recovery partition
Possibly, but I don't know definitely if there is anything to
differentiate the recovery partition to grub. However, it will
continue to be on your XP loader list.
I would worry more about XP recovery destroying grub.
FYI
I very recently purchased a new notebook which came with XP and a
"protected" 10GB recovery partition. I wanted to install linux so I first
made an image of my entire drive. Then I used partition magic to reduce
the first partition (the XP one) to 20GB leaving a whopping 40GB free. I
actually installed three different linux distros and all installed just
fine into this area. The first install put grub in its proper place and
easily identified the XP AND the recovary partition as well as a 1GB boot
partition that is an "emergency" windoze recovery partition. All are
living well and grub is doing its job just perfectly!!!
Good luck and if you're careful you shouldn't have any problems.
