A ipw3945 module for Gentoo 2006.1

I am new to Gentoo, but have tried using emerge on a Gentoo 2006.1 system to get ipw3945 support. All proceeds apparently to completion using the command:
emerge ieee80211 ipw3945
However, the module ipw3945 is placed in sub-directories ieee80211 and wireless of /lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r5/net while all the other modules of the kernel are in /lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r7. Notice the difference -r5 as opposed to -r7. The tag on the name of the kernel boot image from the installation CD is -r7. When I run
modprobe ipw3945
ipw3945 cannot be found, while
/etc/init.d/ipw3945d start
generates error messages that it cannot find the daemon ipw3945d. The kernel linux-2.6.17.tar.bz2 was downloaded during the automatic process that is emerge.
I understand that the 'emerge' technique is the appropriate technique to use in Gentoo. But it has not worked for me. Has anybody had success in getting the ipw3945 driver module working under Gentoo? If so, from my description above, what am I doing wrong?
