Partition /dev/hda3 is mounted with write permissions,
cannot check it.
Here is the "mount" output:
/dev/hda3 on / type reiserfs (ro)

Right here it says /dev/hda3 would be mounted read-only, thus
fsck should work on it!

Presuming from the fact that you didn't answered my question
about patches installed and the fact that almost none ever
installs any patch, you haven't installed a single one?

And perhaps just run into a bug that has been fixed long time
ago...

I'd use some Knoppix or alike to boot, which has fsck.reiserfs
available and try to run it on unmounted /dev/hda3 and see how
this works out. If the suse rescue image is incapable of running
without mounting /dev/hda3.

I'd install all patches available as soon as you can boot up as
usual again.

Good luck

Hello Michael, patches are supposed to be automatically
installed (yast2) but I think there is something wrong there.

The most broken admin tool I have ever seen on Linux. ;(

It doesn't let me install them manually. I think I shall

The problem might well be your read-only mounted /, you just
can't install patches if you can't write to /.

have to re-install the operating system, which I hate doing
as the consequences are unpredictable. Many thanks for your

You shouldn't need to reinstall, just try following my advice to
boot from some Knoppix or alike which has the needed fsck to
check/fix reiserfs and run it on your root partition. If you get
this fixed it is likely your system should start up probably and
allow to install the patches.

help. I'll post some follow-up in case anyone is interested.

Good luck
